What is Gacha Deviation Score? | Quantifying Your Genshin Impact Luck
You've probably heard fellow Travelers say things like "I got an amazing pull!" or "I haven't gotten a 5-star in forever..." While gacha is fundamentally based on luck, it's surprisingly difficult to objectively determine whether your luck is actually "good" or "bad." This is where the concept of "Gacha Deviation Score" comes in.
The term "deviation score" might remind you of standardized test scores from school. Test deviation scores compare your performance to the national average, showing how much above or below average you scored. Gacha deviation scores work similarly - they compare "how many 5-star characters (especially featured ones) you've obtained for the number of pulls you've made" against the average of other players, then quantify this as a numerical score.
Genshin Impact Gacha System Review
Let's first review the basic rules of Genshin's "Featured Character Event Wish" system.
Hard Pity (Maximum 90 Pulls)
In Genshin's gacha system, you're guaranteed to get a 5-star character within 90 pulls at worst. This "pity system" prevents the nightmare scenario of never getting a 5-star due to extremely bad luck.
Soft Pity (Increased Rates from Pull 74 Onwards)
Actually, even before reaching the 90-pull hard pity, the 5-star drop rate gradually increases starting around pull 74. This "soft pity" significantly affects the actual experience and is a unique feature of Genshin Impact.
50/50 System and Guarantee
On featured banners, even when you pull a 5-star, there's a 50% chance it won't be the featured character. However, if you get a non-featured 5-star, your next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured character. This is another "player-friendly" design unique to Genshin.
How Gacha Deviation Scores Work
The Calculation Method
Gacha deviation scores are calculated using the following process:
- Simulate thousands of gacha sessions with the same number of pulls you've made
- Count how many 5-star characters each simulation obtained
- Compare your actual results to this distribution
- Convert the comparison into a deviation score (50 = average, higher = better luck)
Interpreting Your Score
Deviation Score | Luck Level | Description |
---|---|---|
70+ | Exceptional | Top 2% of players - incredible luck! |
60-69 | Very Good | Top 16% of players - great luck |
40-59 | Average | Normal range - typical results |
30-39 | Below Average | Bottom 16% - unlucky |
30- | Very Unlucky | Bottom 2% - extremely bad luck |
Practical Applications
When to Use Deviation Scores
Gacha deviation scores are most useful when:
- You want to objectively assess your gacha luck
- Comparing results with friends
- Deciding whether to continue pulling or save for future banners
- Understanding if your bad luck streak is statistically significant
Limitations to Keep in Mind
Remember that:
- Small sample sizes (few pulls) can be misleading
- The score doesn't guarantee future results
- RNG is still RNG - anything can happen
